People with Disability Awareness Day (PWDAD)

Whether it's for employment or independence Oklahomans deserve access for all. This year starting at 11 am on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the state Capitol, we are asking people with disabilities, friends, families and Legislators to be front and center when it comes to disability initiatives. Together we can bring an end to access-related barriers for people with disabilities.

This event is an opportunity to engage lawmakers and help them understand what programs are vital to reach these goals.

You have a better chance of talking to your Legislator in person if you call to make an appointment at least two weeks before Awareness Day. Find out who your Legislators are at https://go.usa.gov/xRtqC.

Or call to make an appointment: Senate: 405-524-0126 or House of Representatives: 800-522-8502.

Remember: the Legislator's job is to be in committee meetings or on the floor of the Senate or House of Representatives when state business is being conducted. If your Legislator is not in the office, please give your message to the staff. Legislators depend heavily on their staff and often receive information this way.

USHER SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY - OWN THE EQUINOX

The autumnal equinox marks the start of days that contain more darkness than light. It is a great metaphor for the threat of Usher syndrome. We want to Own the Equinox, claiming the third Saturday in September as Usher syndrome awareness day. But to do so, we need your help. We want this to be a worldwide event that starts on one side of the world (we're looking at you, Australia) and runs around the globe to the farthest point before the international date line (that’s your cue, Alaska).

Disabilities Awareness Day

Awareness Day gives people with disabilities and advocates, like you, a chance to talk with decision-makers who can preserve or expand services that make a critical difference in the lives of Oklahomans with disabilities. Last year, more than 775 people participated in this free event, which is hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services and friends.

This year, our attendance goal is 780 people with 50 percent visiting state Senators and Representatives or their staff. Volunteers will be available to take you on legislative visits and provide other assistance if needed.
