2017-2018 OKC Metro Interpreter Workshop Series - “Deaf Tend, Hearing Tend” When Two Cultures Collide…How to Build a Bridge so They Can Get Over It –

As interpreters, we are usually the only ones in the room who understand what everyone else is saying. Often times, our Hearing and Deaf clients have very different world views and we feel stuck in the middle. How do we successfully voice or sign the intended message in a way that makes cultural sense to our clients and how do we keep from allowing our own cultural biases from impeding their understanding? Come learn with this unique mother-daughter team as we discover strategies for cultural bridge-building! Presented in sign language

2017-2018 OKC Metro Interpreter Workshop Series - “Say What?”

2017-2018 OKC Metro Interpreter Workshop Series - “Say What?”

Presenters: Rene’ Ryan and Kena Lundy

“Say What?” Often, as interpreters, we focus upon sign expansion since that isn’t the native language for most of us. However, the words we select can make a difference in how our deaf consumer is viewed in the hearing world. Are we doing all we can to reduce barriers and misconceptions… or are we oppressing and limiting them based upon OUR OWN limitations? This workshop will focus on expanding interpreters’ vocabulary so we can do the most professional job possible.
